Where are you at one point a Jesuit priest or a candidate to become a Roman catholic? What is your spiritual background? Have you ever been saved or baptized or belong to a church?
I think it's impossible to navigate social and political environment without an ideology. Ideology or Weltanschauung is just a more or less coherently coalescing set of ideas. In the same way as one can't speak without learning a language. However, what usually happens is that one's own set of coalescing ideas is never seen as an ideology but rather as a very practical view of the world.
It's only the others that have a different set that cling to an ideology, lol.
Hyam Salomon did not finance the Revolutionary War. This is a myth promoted by Polish Jews, competing with established German Jews for status when they began to enter this country in numbers after the turn of the 19th century. He was a broker working for Robert Morris - the true Financier of the Revolution. His knowledge of languages made him useful to Morris, but there were many other men doing similar work at that time. For a scholarly discussion of Salomon, see Dr. Beth S. Wenger’s work “History Lessons: The Creation of American Jewish Heritage.” (Princeton University Press) Chapter five, subtitled “The Myths and Monuments of Hyam Salomon,” is devoted to debunking the false claims that have been allowed to circulate about his actual contribution to the Revolutionary War effort.
Most of the money for the Revolutionary War was French in origin. Partly it was state money (after all France was bankrupted by the Revolutionary war) - but the other part was wealthy Fench individuals which provided seed money for the conflict, in particular through Pierre Beaumarchais (of Figaro, Barber of Sevilla fame). Some of the funders were aristocracy, some were rich bourgeouis, and since banking was partly Jewish, some of the conduits were Jewish too.
Up to WW1, there were 3 waves: Before the Revolution, most North American Jews were of Sephardic origin, with their ancestors fleeing the Inquisition in Portugese Brazil and Spanish Latin America. Sephardic settlers were already a topic of correspondence between Peter Stuyvesant and Dutch government which forced him to tolerate them. After New Amsterdam was taken over by the British Crown, toleration continued. Beginning with middle 18th century, lots of Germans started settling in what would become USA. Some of them were Protestants, some Catholics, and some were Jewish. Russian Jews (Polish Jews settling in USA were mostly from the Russian empire), started coming in the 2nd half of the 19th century.
Banking in America was not partly Jewish prior to the RW. As Zman mentioned, there were very few Jews in the colonies; Hyam Salomon stands out because of their rarity. He was certainly a patriot, but he does not deserve credit for the outsized contribution which has been assigned to him.
It’s ironic that the French received such a poor return on their investment in our origin. The money was not repaid; the French Revolution can certainly trace its genesis to that “gift.” I learned about their nation’s impact when I began to research an ancestor who was essential to the founding. It certainly was not emphasized in the history courses I undertook in secondary school or afterwards.
"... ironic that the French received such a poor return..."
Indeed. Some of it was driven by the "Nationalists" wishing for revenge for losing the 7 year war (or the French&Indian war, whatever you prefer).
But another part was seeing that having the example of well-ordered liberal parliamentary monarchies in Britain and Netherlands did not provide enough inducement for a similar reordering of the French state. So there was hope that supporting a radical liberal revolution in North America could be such an inducement. In fact it was. This seems to have been also the motivation for such figures as Pierre Beaumarchais. I mean he's a model subversive straight out of a book. Lion Feuchtwanger wrote about this subject in "Weapons for America" aka "Foxes in the Vineyard".
Reading it, one has no problems understanding why CCP-affiliated donors pour billions into Pro-Hamas protests at the US universities.
