There is a story, probably apocryphal, that when Lincoln met some Haitians, he marveled at their ability to speak French. Again, it is probably not a true story, but it could easily be a true story. We associate languages with the rest of the things that make up a people. An African speaking a European language is like seeing a white guy in traditional Japanese attire. It just seems weird.
