The Birth of a Nation is the oldest film on the AFI top-100 list of films and it is also the most notorious film on the list. It was made in 1915 and it is arguably the first remake, as the original was made in 1911. That version, called The Clansman, has been lost, mostly due to the fact that the theaters at the time did not have the equipment to play it. D.W. Griffin then ripped off the original producer to make the 1915 version.
