Greg Hood has argued from time to time that the real power in America is the media, because once the media gets on board with something, no one in politics dares take the other position on that thing. The media is not setting policy, but they have the whip hand in picking who sets policy. In effect, the media is the primary constituency of both political parties, rather than elements of the general public.
