The old line about men who believe in nothing will fall for everything is pretty much the subtest of the modern age. Christianity is mocked as superstition, but nature worship is perfectly rational. The people who look down on the belief in God cannot shup up about being on the right side of history. Religious tradition is ridiculous, but democracy is a god we must worship. The universe has a sense of humor.
The strange thing about the basket of fads and superstitions that make up the new religion is the instinctive intolerance. All religions are intolerant to some degree, simply because they assert a universal set of claims. Christians believe Jesus was the son of God and there is no room for debating it. In order to be a Christian, you must be intolerant of any questioning of this core belief.
