Arguably the greatest trick the devil has ever pulled is to convince people that the opposite of their enemy is their friend. This is most obvious in politics, where participants usually start from who or what they oppose. The friend-enemy distinction consumes political participants to the point where they are often defined entirely by their enemies. In politics, you are usually what you oppose and little else.
