A puzzle that no one seems to discuss is why certain people are driven mad by politics or events that become political. In some cases, an otherwise normal person goes bonkers over something like an election. In other cases, the person remains stable in most things, but goes bonkers over a certain subject. It is as if some part of the brain blew a fuse and the circuit was never repaired.
My first observation of this was during the 2000 election. Like my conservative friends, I was no fan of George Bush, but Al Gore was too weird. There was also the Clinton fatigue that everyone felt. Bush was not good, but he was normal. On the other hand, my liberal friends hated Bush like he was evil itself. The controversy over the election untethered them from reality and they never recovered.
