At the beginning of the war, all of the finest people said that the Russians would run out of resources in months, if not weeks. Russia did not have the ability to maintain an army in the field for very long. In addition, the economic sanctions would make it impossible for them to allocate what was needed for the war. The Ukrainians just had to hold out for a few months and the Russians would have no choice but to retreat.
This was the cornerstone of American policy in Ukraine. NATO would supply Ukraine with the weapons, supplies, training and cash to outlast the Russians. Over the last eight months the West has handed over all of their Soviet era weapons, plus massive stocks of modern Western weapons. Billions in cash has been transferred to Ukraine to prop up their economy during the war.
