Before the technological age, the economic dispute revolved around how much the state should interfere in markets. Capitalists had already settled on social democracy as an antidote to radicalism by the time Austrian economics came along to debate the finer points of radical economics. Therefore, the issue was not whether the state should intervene in markets, but how and how much.
