There is a famous Roman expression first written down by Tacitus, at least we think he was the first to do so, that says, "This is an unfair thing about war: victory is claimed by all, failure to one alone." It is a modern interpretation of the Latin. There was no colon in the Latin language. Later an Italian diplomat rephrased it as "Victory has one hundred fathers, but no wants to recognize failure."
