Max Planck famously observed that a new scientific idea does not triumph by convincing its opponents, but because its opponents eventually die and the new generation, open to the new idea, take their place. The short version of this is "science progresses one funeral at a time." This is probably true for all human systems, as we seem to be seeing with our political system.
