One of the most popular ideas from Peter Turchin is the concept of elite overproduction, which describes a phase in a society where it produces too many potential elite members than the elite can absorb. It is most popular with smart people outside the elite as it allows them to imagine themselves as part of a counter elite, but it also conforms to observations about the elite.
