The first few episodes of a new television show do not always give you a good basis to judge the series, especially when the first episode is the pilot. Often the pilot is used to plan changes to the show. The test audience and critics get to see it and the writers then make changes based on the responses. Sometimes it takes a few episodes to work out how to implement those changes to the original plan.
