"If you are so smart, why aren't you rich?" is one of those old-time expressions that people would use when confronted by someone showing off their brain. It has always been assumed that rich people are smart. Not smart in the lawyer sort of way, but smart in ways average people cannot fathom. After all, poor people are often unfathomably dumb in the choices they make, which keeps them in poverty.
