I have had pets for almost all of my life. The one period when I did not have a pet was in my teenage years, but otherwise I have always had pets. As a kid I had dogs, birds, fish, reptiles, a racoon and a squirrel. I never had a cat as my father never liked them for some reason. I think he was a bit superstitious about them. A feral cat used to stare at him out in the yard and it freaked him out.
In my twenties a woman I was dating suggested I get a cat. I got talked into buying what I thought was a Siamese from this hippy breeder. She gave me a deal because the cat did not meet whatever standards she had for cats. It turned out she was making hybrid cats so I ended up with freakish Siamese that was much longer and taller than normal. He was a bit unstable, but that turned out to be a good thing.
