There are movies that turn up on the greatest film lists because they represent a technical advance or maybe a change in how films are presented. There are films that are simply the first to do something. Some films have come to represent an era, even though the film itself is maybe not the best film of that era. There are films in the AFI-100 that are just amazingly good films. One of those is The Third Man.
