It seems to me that the distinguishing characteristic of our modern elites is their total lack of loyalty to their fellow citizens. No doubt the Western elites in the 19th and 20th Century looked down an a fair number of people further down the social ladder, but they still had some sense of obligation to not make their lives worse and look after their interests to some extent. In contrast, as noted above, modern elites absolutely hate the ordinary man and adopt their various luxury beliefs not just to set themselves apart but to justify punishment for the unenlightened.

The don't even realize it in most cases though. Time and time again we see politicians, media figures, academics, "experts" etc. express bewilderment at the hostility they get from the public. They believe they are owed deference to their authority but don't recognize that you only get that when the people they seek to rule trust them, and they have spent the better part of the last half century demonstrating they cannot be trusted at all. The election of Trump in 2016 and even more so in 2024 is a signal that a very large share of the public doesn't want reform, they want the wrecking ball. It's still amazing to me that so many people don't get this.
