Years ago, I pointed out a pattern that has existed in the tech world since the very start of the microprocessor revolution. This pattern follows the cycle of the universe in that there is a period of consolidation and centralization, which is then followed by a period of disaggregation and decentralization. This has been most obvious in the various types of platforms for social interaction.
