The original Planet of the Apes film was helped by being sort of a big budget, high production value B-movie because it lacked the pretentiousness that could easily have overwhelmed the material. Because it was a big success the studio set about making a sequel, which lacked the quality of acting, directing and writing, so the result was an amusingly terrible B-movie about the apes.
