The first political convention I can recall is the 1972 Republican convention that nominated Richard Nixon. I was a little kid, but I remember it because everyone kept talking about how it would be a landslide election and I thought they meant landslide as in rocks and boulders careening down a hill. My father used a deck of cards, while laughing, to explain to me what they meant by landslide.
