In reviewing the AFI-100 movies I have often commented upon the fact that comedy does not have staying power. Comedies from previous eras do not strike present day viewers as funny. There was a time when pratfalls and rapid-fire one-liners made people laugh, but that is not funny to modern people. In fact, it seems weird to think that a man slipping on a banana peel was once funny.
