The 1930 version of All Quiet on the Western Front is considered both a classic film and the greatest antiwar film of all time. Part of that reputation is due to the novel on which the movie is based. The novel was an instant success and an instant controversy because of its depiction of the Great War. Europe was still struggling with what it had done to itself during the war, so it was a touchy subject.
